The Flash Finally Delivers on DeVoe in its Season Finale

Stay on target

Season Four of The Flash was an odd one. It started out so desperate to course correct from the grim downer of Season Three, that the first half felt largely inconsequential. I love a good villain of the week episode as much as anyone, but they have to be building up to something. The Thinker, what he wanted, what he would do, was kept so much of a mystery it was hard to really care. He didn’t really come into his own as a villain until late in the season. Once he did, this season became so much better. And last night, it gave us one of the more exciting finales we’ve seen from The Flash.

With DeVoe’s enlightenment underway, things are going all the way wrong. Even the good news that Barry’s about to get his forensics job back has to wait. All the machines in Central City lose power at once, and a weird purple energy covers the Earth. If that wasn’t bad enough, Cecile is going into labor right as the world is getting dumber. (So basically the experience of every new mother since 2016 heyooooooooooo.) With no obvious way to defeat DeVoe, things are looking pretty hopeless. Until Iris shows up with Marlize. DeVoe’s estranged wife knows just the way to stop her husband. And it might be one of the weirdest plots this show has given us.

Marlize insists there’s still good in DeVoe’s mind somewhere. The solution would be to bring it out. Physically. She wants to send The Flash into The Thinker’s brain to find the Good Clifford, and encourage him. He’s the only one who can run fast enough to keep up with the pace of Thinker’s brain. So the season finale literally has Barry outrunning the bad guy’s thoughts. It’s an original premise, I’ll give them that. So how do they get Barry inside DeVoe’s brain? By using Cecile’s new telepathic powers to create a bridge into his brain. It works, but there’s a problem. Cecile’s powers are connected to her pregnancy, and she’s in labor. If the baby is born, she can’t keep the gate open, and Barry is trapped in the villain’s mind forever.

So now not only do we have one ticking clock counting down until DeVoe’s stupid ray reaches full power, we have a second one in the form of Cecile’s in-progress childbirth. Right away, it works so much better than last week’s attempt at a time bomb. Last week, a 12-hour clock was thrown up on the screen and the characters all but ignored it for the whole show. This week, they’re treating both clocks like an actual danger. People will be lost if either runs out. It makes for a much more tense, thrilling episode. So Barry has to find the Good DeVoe before his new sister-in-law is born.
